111 Module 6 Animals in Danger 維A 閱讀理解 (2012·浙江,A)Easter(復(fù)活節(jié)) is still a great day for worship, candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies. And no,not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US. Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer—it lives on the islands!—but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0. 9-meter rise would wipe out their habitat(棲息地)completely. The snowshoe hare,on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators(捕食者).As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies are being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators.Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down. American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the first of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 7-8 inches long, pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate(遷移)to higher ground-but they already occupy the mountaintops. They can't go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat heats up. The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle.Scientists are concerned about their populations. Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development.Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs.Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed. All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter. 1.The writer mentions Easter at the beginning of the passage in order to________. A.show the importance of Easter Day B.introduce the issue about bunnies C.remind people of Easter traditions D.discuss the relationship between Easter and bunnies 2.The word “culprit” (Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to________. A.criminal B.judge C.victim D.producer 3.According to the passage, some rabbits can now be easily discovered by predators because they________. A.a(chǎn)re exposed to more skillful hunters B.have moved to habitats with fewer plants C.haven't adapted themselves to climate change D.can't change their fur color into white in the fall and the spring 4.The problem faced by volcano rabbits and rock rabbits is that________. A.both are affected by less snow B.both are affected by rising sea levels C.neither can find enough food D.neither can migrate to higher places 5.Which best describes the writer's tone in the passage? A.Approving. B.Concerned. C.Enthusiastic. D.Doubtful. 介紹rock rabbits時(shí)說:they already occupy the mountaintops/They can't go any higher,另外說:The volcano rabbit has the same problem. A. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. 賓語從句④Researchers_know_that_the_ color_change_is_controlled_by_the_number_of_hours_of_sunlight...主語從句⑤whether_the_rabbit_will_be_able_to_adapt_quick_enough_to_survive... Obtaining fresh water from icebergs The idea of getting fresh water from icebergs that are moved to populated areas or places was once treated as a joke.Recently, scientists have warned that the human race will outgrow its fresh water supply faster than it runs out of food.__1__ Glaciers are a possible source of fresh water that has been overlooked until recently.__2__It contains fresh water so much that it could sustain all the rivers of the world for 1,000 years. Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth to icebergs throughout the year.__3__However, they are formed entirely on land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea.As they drift away from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a direction opposite to the wind.Because they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean.__4__The difficulty exists such as its rapid melting in warmer climates.__5__ A.Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is formed when the sea itself freezes. B.Now it is being considered quite serious by many nations. C.7,659 trillion metric tons of ice is floating on the sea every year. D.But the water they could provide would be far cheaper than that produced. E.To move them to try parts of the world would not be too difficult. F.It is not a dream to get water from Icebergs. G.Three-quarters of the Earth's fresh water supply is still tied up in glacial ice. 1.B [上一句話的warned that the human race wil outgrow its fresh water supply和本項(xiàng)的considered quite serious by many nations吻合,說明當(dāng)前淡水資源短缺的大背景。] 3.A [下一句的they are formed entirely on land和本項(xiàng)的which is formed when the sea itself freezes形成鮮明的對(duì)比,但是說的都是形成方式。] 4.E [本項(xiàng)的would not be too difficult和下一句話的The difficulty形成對(duì)比關(guān)系。] 5.D [上一句的The difficulty和本項(xiàng)的far cheaper than that produced形成轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系,說明這種方式的優(yōu)勢(shì)所在。] With the College Entrance Examinations coming, more and more students in Senior Three___________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【參考范文】 With the College Entrance Examinations coming, more and more students in Senior Three are occupied in doing test papers and checking answers, which is hardly good for students to develop their abilities of all aspects, some students say. However,as far as I'm concerned,I do believe that it will still be of value to do many test papers and check answers for the Senior Three students. The reasons are as follows: First, doing more test papers can help students to find where they are weak and where they are strong.By doing so,students can consolidate the knowledge that they should know for the examination.Second, checking answers with other students is a good method to help students to learn to be more careful. What's more,by checking answers with other students, they can share answers with each other, which will surely develop and increase the cooperative spirit among students. 111- 1.
